PURGOTEC A effervescent Suppositories
Ingredients:
Tartaric acid, Sodium Bicarbonate and others.
Properties:
Tartaric
Acid: An organic
acid naturally occurring in many plants, particularly grapes.
In this
formulation, it acts as an acidic component in an effervescent system.
When
combined with sodium bicarbonate in a moist environment (e.g., rectum), it
initiates an acid-base reaction, releasing carbon dioxide (CO₂).
Sodium
Bicarbonate: A basic
compound commonly used as a buffering and effervescent agent.
Mechanism of
Action:
When PURGOTEC
A is inserted rectally, the tartaric acid and sodium bicarbonate interact with
rectal moisture to produce carbon dioxide gas, leading to:
Effervescent
stimulation of the rectal mucosa.
Gentle distension
of the rectum, triggering natural defecation reflexes.
Rapid onset
of laxative effect, typically within 15–30 minutes.
Indications:
PURGOTEC A
Effervescent Suppositories are indicated for:
Temporary
relief of constipation in adults and children.
Evacuation
of the bowel prior to:
Rectal
examinations.
Diagnostic
procedures (e.g., proctoscopy).
Minor rectal
surgery.
Supportive
bowel emptying in bedridden or post-operative patients where oral laxatives are
contraindicated or undesirable.
